Perimenopause: Cutting through the Noise and Embracing the Transition

Perimenopause is having its cultural moment on center stage— finally. After years of doctors dismissing women’s symptoms and disappointing us with an overwhelming lack of support for this experience, the internet is now flooded with information.

Women are sharing their experiences and wisdom. Companies are racing to create new tracking devices and supplements to meet the demand of the market. Influencers are selling products that reflect their latest brand deals.

With a sudden onslaught of information and things to buy, it can be overwhelming to make sense of it all. Some of it is helpful. Some of it is beautiful. And, some of it is falsely alarmist.

Perimenopause is being pathologized to the max. The narrative is that there is so much that starts to go “wrong” during perimenopause… and here’s how to “fix” it.

Suddenly, women are scared— that their bodies are filled with inflammation, that their hormones are wildly out of control, and that their health is in some kind of an emergency state.

Or, if you haven’t started to feel those symptoms, it’s just a matter of time.

Better get on it! Or, you’ll be sorry.

The good news is— this is simply not true.

And, perimenopause was never meant to feel this way.

Perimenopause is not a condition or a disease. It is a transition— one that women have been navigating for all of time. It is not new, and there is no need for us to panic. Even if you did absolutely “nothing,” your body would still get through this transitional moment.

It’s important to remember that women have been finding ways to support themselves through this experience for thousands of years. And, I don’t mean by wishing or praying it away. I mean by quietly observing, sharing, learning, and building a base of knowledge over generations.

This is where Traditional Chinese Medicine comes in. Stay tuned!
